Splinewright
A native, open-source vector illustration app with the pen and shape tools, Pathfinder, live effects, gradient meshes, perspective grids and type, on a fast multithreaded renderer. This is the actual program compiled to WebAssembly, so what you try below is what runs on the desktop.
Runs entirely in this tab. It is a big download the first time (up to about 30 MB, less when your browser gets it compressed) and is cached after that. Needs a browser with WebGPU or WebGL2.
Pick an example and launch it, or open your own SVG, PDF or Splinewright file from inside the editor. Files are read in your browser and never uploaded. If it does not start, your browser may lack WebGPU and WebGL2.
Download for Windows
Splinewright 0.6.0 for Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit), as a single program: unzip it and double-click Splinewright.exe. There is no installer and nothing is uploaded. It is the same code as the live preview, built from commit bcd4fe7 on 2026-10-13.
Download the .zip (27.6 MB)Just the .exe (68.3 MB)
The zip holds the program and its license files. SHA-256 of the zip: de4f8b853edd4e1c95b6a6e0df5a190c3d697bf73f5a3ce9ef74e8b3c0f0902d
Windows will warn you. The file is not code-signed (a signing certificate costs money I have not spent), so SmartScreen says “Windows protected your PC”. If you trust it, choose More info and then Run anyway; you can check the SHA-256 above, or build it yourself from the source. It needs a graphics card with DirectX 12 or Vulkan; without one, use the live preview. For macOS and Linux, build from source.
What it is
Splinewright is a fork of VectorCraft, a vector illustration app written from scratch in Rust. It keeps that project's engine: a pure-data document, exact curve booleans, unlimited undo through structural sharing, and one registry of commands that the menus, the command line, a JSON control channel and an MCP server for AI agents all share.
The same repository builds three programs: the desktop editor, a headless command-line tool for batch work and scripting, and this browser build.
What works today
- Pen, Direct Selection, shape and brush tools, Pathfinder and the Shape Builder, with real Bezier anchors and handles
- Live effects: Blends, Envelope Distort, Repeat, Live Corners, glows and shadows, on type too
- Gradients, gradient meshes, patterns, a perspective grid and multiple artboards
- Type with character and paragraph styles, type on a path, and Hebrew, Arabic and Japanese layout
- SVG, PDF (including PDF-compatible .ai), EPS, DXF and EMF/WMF in and out, plus PNG, JPEG and WebP export
- A scriptable command line and an MCP server, so an agent can draw and edit the way a person does
What I changed
This is a fork of VectorCraft, an early-alpha project. I kept its engine and fixed or finished things first, then added a few features of my own.
- Rebranded and re-iconed, with the original authors credited and the licenses kept intact
- Check Spelling: a bundled English dictionary, a dialog with suggestions, Change All and Ignore All, and a custom dictionary
- Check Contrast: the WCAG ratio between two objects, or an object and a background colour
- Splinewright Help (F1) now opens the documentation, one of the menu items that was a stub
- The CLI gained palette (the colours a document uses) and contrast (a WCAG calculator that gates on AA)
- This web build opens straight into an example and can load one by a link
- A size-optimised browser build, and a Windows download (a zip with the .exe) built from the same code
Honest limits
- It is under active development. The upstream roadmap puts it at roughly 69 to 75 percent of Illustrator's features and 40 to 55 percent of a power user not noticing the difference, and I have not changed that
- No 3D and Materials, no Effect Gallery of raster filters, no scripting or data merge, and vertical Japanese composition is incomplete
- The web build has no file-system access, so Save and Export download a file
- Pen tablets on some Linux setups and several interaction details are still rough
